In the nearest future the local authorities in the city of Hrodna are planning to start broadening the old bridge across Neman River. As result all transit traffic is to flow into old and narrow streets of the Hrodna historic center. It cannot only be tolerated from the logical point of view but also contradicts the general layout of Hrodna development approved by president Lukashenka. Besides Hrodna authorities are planning to bury a part of ancient Horodnichanka River landscape and build a multilane road. Is the story of the Niamiga River about to recur?
Youth activists have achieved the Hrodna problem and the fate of the historic center to be discussed at the meeting of Belarusian Republican scientific methods council on the issues of history and culture legacy. The meeting took place in the building of Hrodna Executive Committee on April 19, 2007 under the direction of deputy minister of culture Vladimir Hridyushka. However the latter didn't let in any public representatives and approved the plan of Hrodna historic center demolition proposed by head of Regional Executive Committee and board of "HrodnaGrazhdanProekt" organization.
Besides, there was a decision made at the meeting to demolish 40 houses dating back to the XIX and the beginning of the XX century.
At the same time there is a sound and legal alternative transportation problem solution for Hrodna which has been documentarily supported by Ministry of Building and Architecture and Belarusian Institute of Town-planning which conforms to general layout of Hrodna development, which had been approved by Belarus president Lukashenka in 2003. There are also some proposals on historic center reconstruction.
However, it is not a problem for Hrodna authorities supported by the Ministry of Culture! They are deliberately breaking all laws and regulations as they plan to get profit from selling this unoccupied any more land by action. They have even declared that there are already buyers from Russia for this land!
Dear friends! It depends on us whether the royal city of Hrodna will preserve its unique look! We call upon you not to stay indifferent to this problem and make a feasible effort of saving the city from demolition!
